Amarillo hops feature some of the highest Myrcene oil contents of any hop variety, resulting in incredibly sweet citrus flavors and aromas. Amarillo shares similar flavor profiles with Cascade hops and is one of the most popular American varieties today.

Origin

GR Amarillo hops were a result of a chance discovery in 1990 by Virgil Gamache Farms in Toppenish, WA. The hop’s bright yellow compact cones and immature leaves caught the attention of the farm. In 1991, Virgil Gamache started propagation and named the hop Amarillo, which means yellow in Spanish.

In 2003, the farm patented the new variety under the name VGXP01. To date, German Amarillo hops are exclusively grown by Virgil Gamache Farms.

Characteristics

Amarillo is known for its spicy, semi-sweet character and ultra-citrusy aroma with light notes of fruits and florals. Specific aroma descriptors include lemon, orange, melon, grapefruit, peach and apricot. The hop’s prominent citrus quality makes it a good variety for wheat styles.

While Amarillo is often used in dry-hopping, its low Co-Humulone levels increase bittering properties. This unique hop also demonstrates good resistance to downy and powdery mildew.

Featuring a relatively high alpha acid content, Amarillo makes for a fantastic dual-purpose hop and a suitable addition to English-style pale ales.
