NZ Motueka hops, also known as New Zealand Motueka hops or B Saaz hops, are another hop variety cultivated in New Zealand. They were released by the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited in 2012. Motueka hops are named after the region in New Zealand where they were developed. These hops have gained popularity in the brewing industry due to their unique characteristics.

Aroma Profile: Motueka hops are known for their vibrant and distinct aroma. They offer a blend of citrus, tropical fruit, and spicy notes. The aroma is often described as having characteristics of fresh lime, lemon zest, tropical fruits like pineapple and passion fruit, and a subtle touch of Saaz-like spicy and floral elements.

Flavor: When used in brewing, Motueka hops impart a pronounced flavor that aligns with their aroma profile. The flavors can include zesty citrus, lemon-lime, tropical fruits, and a delicate spiciness. These flavors can add a refreshing and lively dimension to the beer.

Alpha Acid Content: Motueka hops typically have a moderate to high alpha acid content, ranging from approximately 6% to 8%. This allows them to contribute both bitterness and flavor when added during the brewing process.

Dual-Purpose Hop: NZ Motueka hops are considered a versatile dual-purpose hop variety. Their moderate alpha acid content makes them suitable for bittering, while their exceptional aroma and flavor profile make them a great choice for late additions and dry hopping.

Beer Styles: Motueka hops are commonly used in a wide range of beer styles. They work well in pale ales, IPAs, hop-forward lagers, wheat beers, saisons, and other styles where their vibrant citrus and tropical fruit flavors can shine.

Brewers often experiment with different hop combinations to create unique flavor profiles, and Motueka hops can be a valuable addition to the hop arsenal. They contribute a distinctive New Zealand hop character that adds complexity and depth to beers, making them popular among craft brewers seeking to create flavorful and aromatic brews.
