Highly sought for its tropical flavors and heady aromas of cannabis, the U.S. Strata hop has quickly become one of the widely used varieties in the craft brewing industry. This richly flavored hop offers fruity notes, both dried and fresh, with a perfect blend of dried chili and cannabis.
Formerly known as X-331, Strata hops were a result of an open pollinated Perle in Corvallis, Oregon. It was born in 2009 but wasn’t officially launched until 2018. Strata is the first variety to be released out of Indie Hops’ development program in collaboration with Oregon State University.
From its inception, Strata proved to be a game changer. Experienced brewers quickly fell in love with the hop’s enthusiastic growing habit, robust disease resistance, and complex sensory layers.
Brewers have chosen the following hops as sufficient substitutes for Strata:
Strata hops deliver complex notes of tropical fruits including melon, mango, strawberry, grapefruit, and passion fruit. Amid all the citrus notes emerge a dank herbal aroma of drifting cannabis without the diesel or catty bite common to hops that carry the same funky dankness.
Strata has alpha acid values similar to Amarillo and Centennial. This hop is often used in pale ales and IPAs, but also works well with lagers and saisons. Dry hopping deepens the grapefruit notes and dank or cannabis elements.
